The ‘Blood Food,’ is one of the great est medicines of the age, and is rapidly driving out of the market all the quack nostrums of modern times. Its efficacy is so great, and its superiority so justly acknow ledged, that it is found difficult to supply the irnmense and increasing demand for the article. Dr. Eaton’s celebrated ‘Infantile Cordial.’ is a medicine prepared by a regular physician of eminence in his profession, and one who has devoted his life to the peculiar phases of Infantile diseasea. It is no humbug, but a medicine which commends itself to those only who can appreciate it.”—Apalachicola, Flor. Tim**. VeB' Sf.t advtrtisement. It did move at length; but seven out of every i eight aspirants were thrown on the ground and ! tramplt;d under the feet of more suceessft^l rivaLs ; —themselves in turn to be hopeful, laborious, I disappointed and ridden over by others who will probably fare no better. Last spring five and twenty prominent politi cians were more or less confident of being nomi nated for the Presidency—they had done so much fer their party or their country; they were so well qualified and so favorably known; they could control .>such and such influences at the convention; they had hitherto boen so successful, and their star was still in the ascendant. Twenty-one of those were allowed to stay at home; and three of the four who received nominations will be obliged to follow, all the worse for allowing themselves to be dragged towards such an elevation. It is probable not fewer than one hundred, persons were working for the Vice-Presidenc}’, of whom ninety-nine will fail to reach it. We refer to this merely as an illu.stration. The same expectations were formed, the same plans laid, and the same mortifications experienced in pursuit of every office within the gift of the peo ple. That quadruped known by the name of ^'■pr/pu- lus” is indeed exceedingly difficult to break or ride. When fairly started, with a favorite on his back, he will outstrip the wind; but in nine cases out of ten he is apt to toss his riders on their heads, or else halt on the I’oarse, though the rowels should be plunged ever so deeply into his flanks. Alex ander the Great tamed the vicious Bucephalus and nxle him afterwards; Rarey, in our own day, has rendered the world good service by overcoming the natural or acquired depravity of a thousand cour sers; but no Alexander or Rarey has appeared who has been able to teach others the great secret of rendering Populus always tractable, and certain to reach the ^oal by twice the length of hie own body. Still the crowd of appUcants for a race press forward as eager and expectant as ever. No sooner is the fact announced than a dozen arc clamorous to take a ride. Il they have ever been thrown or have fallen behind on a former occasion, their misfortune does not deter them from mak- I ing a fresh attempt. The animal is supposed to j be le.ss vicious, or they are better skilled as to 1 the methods of managing him. In their diction- 1 ary there is no such word as fail, you know, j Haven’t they read the story of Robert Bruce and j the spider? Does it not encourage them to try I again, even seven times, if necessary? I The man endowed with abilities of the highest I kind will, like the horse-tamers referred to, study 1 clasely the nature and habits of the quadruped I with the causes which have rendered it vicious 1 or easily frightened. He will devise new methods I for approaching it, for winning and retaining its ; affections. He will know when to caress and to I what extent, when to apply the reins, and when i to crack the whip. He will succeed, simply be- i cause he is endowed with the genius of Alexander j or a Rarey. But your mediocrity man should I depend less upon shining abilities than patient I effort's, and less upon these than truth, incor- j ruptible integrity and honor. In intellectual ! power or culture it may be impossible for him I to take the front rank; but in honesty of purpose 1 he can be as strong as Samson. In a few moments his finger was swollen to four times its natural size,- and a red streak commenced running up his hand and wrist. A deadly lanpuor came u^n him, and his vision grew dim, clearly indicating that the subtle poison that was coursing through his veins ys rapidly approaching the citadel of life. But a remedy was tried, merely by way of experiment, which, to the surprise of all present, acted like a charm, the components of which were onion, tobacco, and salt, of equal parts, made into a poultice and applied to the wound, and at the same time^a cord was bound tightly about the wrist. In two hours afterwards h^ had sq re covered as to be able to resume his work. I knew an old negro who cured a boy that had beeo bitten by a mad-dog by the same application, Pftmf>Mrg ihiprat.
